The Convent of Christ is 130 km north-east of Lisbon, in Tomar — a small medieval town in central Portugal. Unlike Alcobaça and Batalha, Tomar has a direct train from Lisbon, making rail a serious option. This guide compares the practical routes and recommends by traveller profile.

By train (the rail-friendly option)

CP (Comboios de Portugal) runs the Linha do Norte train service from Lisbon Santa Apolónia (or Lisbon Oriente) to Tomar. Journey time 2 hours, with regular services through the day. Fares typically €11-15 one-way. Tomar station is in the centre of town; the convent is a 15-minute walk uphill (or 5-minute taxi).

Train is the recommended budget option for visitors without a car — it's faster than the intercity bus and arrives in the town centre. Last return from Tomar is typically around 21:00 (check cp.pt for the current schedule before you travel). The Convent of Christ is the standout attraction; Tomar town itself rewards a couple of hours of exploring.

By car

Drive from Lisbon is 2 hours via the A1 motorway and the A23 (about €13 toll one-way). Free parking at the convent — about 200 metres from the main entrance, signposted from approaches. A car works best if you'll combine Tomar with Batalha (45 minutes west) or Fátima (35 minutes west).

From Lisbon airport, allow 2h 30min. The drive itself is largely motorway; the final 20 minutes from the A23 exit follow rural roads through eucalyptus and pine forest.

By organised day tour

Less common than tours covering Alcobaça or Batalha. Some operators offer Tomar as part of a Templar-themed day tour combining the convent with the nearby Almourol Castle (a 12th-century Templar fortress on an island in the Tagus). Prices from €60-100 per person. Smaller minivan options with private guide from €150+.

Tomar tour buses arrive 11:00-13:00 — peak window. If you want the quiet morning visit (best before 11:00), organised tour won't give it to you. Self-driving or train are better for quiet timing.

Recommendation

Pick the train if you're staying in Lisbon and only visiting Tomar — direct, arrives in town centre, cheap. Pick the car if you'll combine Tomar with Batalha and/or Fátima — Tomar to Batalha is 45 minutes west, an easy combination. Pick the organised tour if you want the Templar-themed commentary and don't drive.

Most travellers from Lisbon choose train (40%) or car (50%). Tours are uncommon. From Porto in the north, Tomar is 2h 30 min by car or 3h 30min by train. Coimbra-based travellers can reach Tomar in 45 minutes by car.
